Having unpacked my Cyclops test unit, the first thing that struck
me was how compact and well designed it is. It’s held in place
by two velcro strips which allow the unit to sit unobtrusively on
the dashboard. There is a wire that fits into the vehicle’s
cigarette lighter and once plugged in, the Cyclops was ready to use
after just a few seconds.
When I was about 800m away from a speed detector, the Cyclops gave
a warning of three beeps and displayed green. At 400 yards, Cyclops
displayed red and at 200 yards the red display flashed and beeped
in intensity.
Once past the detector, the beeping stops and the display showed parallel
lines across the screen and reverted back to my choice of setting.
There are several different settings to choose from: Alert Mode, which
gave me alerts to a range of SDDs; Heading mode, for basic navigation;
Visible Satellite Mode to check GPS reception; Overspeed Mode, if
you are going too fast when approaching an SDD; Limiter Mode, which
sounds when you have gone over a pre-selected speed limit. All of
these are easy to set and use.
When the sun reflected on the Cyclops it was hard to read the display,
but the warning beeps did alert me to potential hazards with concise,
easy-to-read information, and I could focus clearly on safety and
the progress of my journey.
Overall, I was impressed with Cyclops.
