Working together
|
| David Jamison,
Transport Minister |
I am delighted to welcome you to RoadSafe,
which in this first issue has been supported by a number of leading
companies in the motor and transport industries and road safety professionals
in a joint bid to provide sound advice on how to reduce occupational
road risk.
It is heartening to see such a diverse group of organisations working
towards our common aims and objectives to reduce the tragic loss of
lives on our roads.
Britains record on road safety is one of the best in Europe
and indeed the world. However, too many deaths are still happening,
with approximately 10 people being killed in road traffic collisions
every day.
In total, there are over 300,000 road casualties every year.
This is an enormous toll in both human and economic terms and there
is no room for complacency. This is why it was decided to set ambitious
new targets and launch a comprehensive new Road Safety Strategy called
Tomorrows Roads - Safer for Everyone, which covers child safety,
driver training and testing, speed, vehicle safety, enforcement, driver
impairment, motorcycle safety, the safety of vulnerable road users
like pedestrians and cyclists, road infrastructure safety and publicity.
By working together and sharing ideas, notably sharing best practice,
we will achieve our road casualty reduction targets set by the Road
Safety Strategy - a 40% reduction in the number of killed and seriously
injured, 50% for children to be achieved by 2010.
